The popularity of Indian baskets was well established in the nineteenth
century as there was a return to hand made items and "crafts" in home decoration.
The widespread belief that Indians were vanishing was coupled with the
Arts and Crafts Movement. This of course significantly affected Indian
weavers who found they could sell or trade their baskets for food and clothing.
Most important on the Northern California coast was a store named A. Brizard,
Inc. In 1863 the founder, A. Brizard, opened a store on the Arcata plaza
and it is still operating today.
