TRADITIONAL AND INVENTED PATTERNS

May Henderson’s (born 1909) Yurok cap is more striking in its bold use of color and unusual arrangement of design combinations than any living weaver in the exhibition (fig. 29). Violet Moore’s (born 1908) Yurok caps reveal an amazing sensitivity of design with wonderful contrasts. Her invented design in the cap lent by Josephine Peters is unique in its use of positive-negative balancing that O’Neale claimed no weavers were using to their full potential in 1929 (fig. 30). These three weavers in their late eighties are the greatest living Yurok cap makers.
