TRADITIONAL COMBINATIONS OF COLOR IN CAPS
Wilkinson has reintroduced the use of black rush roots in her weaving (fig. 19). It was a traditional root for Wiyot weaving but only in small portions. The disappearance of the porcupine
from most North Coast regions in the 1970’s was due to a Forest Service extermination policy. The difficulty of working with quills has also diminished their use except in medallions and
smaller medicine or earring baskets. Most quills now come from outside the area and the porcupine is only slowly returning now that Forest Service policy has changed. The use of
commercial dyes is not highly respected today and its use is probably no more prevalent than in 1929 when more weavers were dependent on selling baskets to buy their food and clothes.
