WILL THE TRADITIONAL WEAVING OF BASKET CAPS RETURN?
Weaving of basket caps is being revived among the Wiyot through the inspirational accomplishments of Leona Wilkinson (fig. 11). She is currently weaving her third cap and has recently
begun teaching weaving to other Wiyot women. I have not learned of any Tolowa weavers making caps or doing closed-work baskets. Loren Bommelyn is the only current Tolowa
basketmaker and he weaves open-work baskets. One of the main difficulties for many beginning basketmakers is that they only weave small baskets and do not make the transition to larger
traditional basket types or learn how to gather materials. Although baskets from the Northwestern California region are popularly misnamed Hupa baskets by non-Indian dealers and collectors,
there are few older Hupa weavers.
