Scope of the Program

The Humboldt State University Native American Studies Department is pleased to announce the approval of its new curriculum. We believe that this nationally unique curriculum will enable us to serve tribal students and tribal nations better than ever before.  We have done our best to develop this new curriculum with the needs of tribes, Indian students, and  non-Indian students in mind.  Our courses are intended to provide all of our students with a realistic appreciation for Native culture, history, and values while increasing their understanding of the unique political status, rights, and responsibilities of tribal nations.

Our Native American Studies major and Native American Studies Department are unique in the California State University system.  The Native American Studies major was established by Humboldt State University in 1994.  The Native American Studies Department was established in 1998.

In reviewing the  Native American Studies curriculum flyer (downloadable word document), you will  note that students pursuing a Native American Studies degree may engage in  either a "general" NAS course of study, or choose a specialized option in  Law & Government, Language & Literature, Society & Culture, or Natural Resources & the Environment.  As these programs become established and our program grows, we anticipate that input from tribes, students, and others will lead to an even more comprehensive program.  Students also have the option of pursuing degrees in other fields of study while completing a "minor" in Native American Studies.  Alternatively, they may create a uniqueinterdisciplinary program of study that integrates Native American Studies coursework, or simply take individual Native American Studies classes as  part of their general course of studies.

Humboldt State University also has some outstanding Native American student service support programs. The Indian Natural Resource, Science & Engineering program   (INRSEP) provides support to students pursuing degrees in the science and natural resource disciplines, including biological sciences, chemistry, computer information systems, environmental engineering, environmental studies, fisheries, forestry/watershed management, geology, mathematics, natural resources planning &interpretation, nursing, oceanography, physics, range management, and wildlife management.  To learn more about INRSEP, please call (707) 826-4994.  The Indian Teacher & Education Personnel Program (ITEPP)  provides support to students who are pursuing degrees that will lead to careers in education, social services, and tribal services.  To learn more about ITEPP, please call (707) 826-3672.
