Tribal Justice Systems
A review of traditional pre-contact and early-contact native American tribal justice systems, with consideration of the impact of colonialism and the emergence of modern tribal justice systems.

Tribal Governance and Leadership
A review of traditional Native American concepts of leadership and community self-governance;  challenges to these systems; and current aspects of tribal civics and governance.

Federal Indian Law I
The legal framework of the government-to-government relationship between Tribes and the federal government.  Tribal sovereignty.  Relationships among tribal, state, and federal governments.

Federal Indian Law II
Continues Federal Indian Law I.  Tribal jurisdiction in Indian Country, tribal and state conflicts over jurisdiction, taxation issues, Hawaiian Native Rights.

Tribal Water Rights
Issues pertaining to Native American water rights, primarily as to tribes, including sovereignty, general water law principles, case law, the impact of damming projects, and the adjudication, litigation, and negotiation of tribal water rights.

Tribal Rights - The Federal Role
The implementation by Federal agencies of the responsibilities to Tribes that the U.S. has assumed through treaties, executive orders, legislation, case law and policy.

Native American Psychology
Paradigmatic and value differences between the dominant society and American Indian tribal cultures;  American Indian identity;  the psychological effects of colonization.

Native Tribes of California
The variety of traditional cultures in Native California.  Cultural and social developments in the post-contact period, and contemporary problems.

Native Tribes of North American Regions
The traditional cultures and contemporary legal and political status of the Tribes of the major regions of North America.  Specific region will vary.  May be repeated.

Native American Literature
Themes, genres, and major figures in contemporary Native American literature (poetry, fiction, and non-fiction).  Focus will vary.  May be repeated.

Oral Literature & Oral Tradition

Survey of Native American oral literature, including mythology and traditional stories, with emphasis on storytelling as education, entertainment, and social interaction.

Environmental Justice in the United States
The creation and implementation of environmental justice policies in Federal agencies, with special reference to issues specific to American Indian Tribes.

Native American Film
Descriptive and interpretive examination of the forms, functions, and meanings of traditional and contemporary Indian life as depicted in film.

Experiential Learning (1- 3 units)
Experiential learning by participation in workshops and projects focusing on traditional and contemporary Native American activities.  Topics will vary.  May be repeated.

International Indigenous Issues
Consideration of the impact of European colonial expansion and economic globalization on indigenous peoples around the world.  Specific topic will vary.

Special Topics
Special topics or problem areas pertaining to Native American law, government, society, culture, language, literature, natural resources or the environment.  Topics will vary and may be repeated.  Examples of topics proposed and/or taught thus far include:
