Reiki Level 1 and 2 Certification
Reiki is an ancient Japanese stress reduction and relaxation technique that also promotes healing. Reiki is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through everything that is alive. If one’s life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress. If it is high, we are more capable of being healthy.
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to understand how this energy might slow down to a trickle. Reiki is believed to help increase the flow of one’s energy, much like a cleaning solvent might open up a clogged water pipe.
Reiki has been scientifically shown to be effective in helping most illnesses and maladies, and is also safe to use in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques.
Five Reiki masters will introduce you to Reiki and guide you in a hands-on experience of this amazingly simple, natural and safe method of healing and self-improvement.
If you wish to experience Reiki firsthand before you commit to these workshops, you are invited to drop in at the Isis Center at 44 Sunny Brae Centre, Arcata on the second or fourth Tuesday of the month, from 6-7:30 p.m. for “donation only” Reiki sessions offered to the community.

Iyengar Yoga
If you think past injuries or present health problems have to keep you out of a yoga class, think again.
Iyengar based yoga — often nicknamed “chiropractic” yoga — is a unique style of yoga that uses props to facilitate correct body alignment, works with ailment sequencing, and relies on longer “pose” hold times. These three areas make Iyengar yoga accessible to nearly every level of ability, age and physical condition and make it a natural compliment to many other popular types of yoga.
In each class, two Iyengar based teachers will work cooperatively to help you use various props, such as chairs, blankets, blocks and straps to explore the therapeutic side of yoga.
Discuss the history of yoga and the current research that shows how a regular yoga practice often results in overcoming stiffness, improving posture, and reducing or eliminating aches, pains and common ailments.
Level 1 introduces yoga basics and is open to everyone. Level 2 delves into body awareness in both basic and late beginner/early intermediate poses, and is open to those who have completed level 1, or those who have previously studied Iyengar-based yoga.
For both levels, please bring a yoga mat and belt, one blanket (5-6 sq. ft.), and an open heart.

In addition to current yoga therapy research, you will explore yoga postures, pranayama (breathing practices), meditation, deep relaxation, Ayurvedic remedies, and yogic lifestyle choices that are known to help those who suffer with asthma.
This workshop will contain both an educational lecture component and a practice component, and they are accessible to participants of all yoga levels.

In this class you will learn how to know your talents, assess your personal style of caregiving, and design a self-care plan that is unique to your needs.
You will identify different patient styles, quickly assess the fit between your style and theirs to gain information, and learn to soothe and persuade the patient to follow healthy instructions.
You will develop skills that will enable you to interface clearly and professionally with medical colleagues and managers, bridging the gap between styles of communication. You will then have a chance to practice and synthesize what you have learned.

Ayurveda: The Science of Self-Healing
Ayurveda means “the science of life.” It is the traditional healing system of India, focusing on wholistic health – body, mind and spirit.
Considered a sister science of yoga, Ayurveda heals by balancing one’s internal environment with the external environment and the rhythms of nature. Ayurveda incorporates nutrition, food choices, lifestyle adjustments, natural herbs, aromatherapy, massage therapy, color therapy, sound therapy and more to bring about this balance.
Ayurveda defines wellness not as “the absence of disease,” but as a “balance of mind, body and spirit.” In fact, Ayurveda says that one who is healthy will be able to maintain health and wellness in spite of potential illness-causing influences. By balancing the various mind-body-spirit functions through Ayurveda, the natural intelligence of the body will automatically awaken.
This is a hands-on, participatory course that provides an overview of the basic principles of Ayurveda, and teaches you how to incorporate them into your daily life for better health, longevity, and peace of mind.

Emotional Brain Training 1: Launching Your Solution
Emotional Brain Training 1 is the first advanced course in the Solution Method for rewiring the emotional brain. It uses The Solution Kit 1: Launching Your Solution. We will build on the introductory training in the method learned in the Wired for Joy course.
Using recent developments in the field of neuroscience, we will learn and practice the skills of positive plasticity to help decrease stress in our lives and live more of the time in well-being and joy. Participants will learn more skills to heal their symptoms of stress and gain freedom from common excesses.
We will gently and effectively learn how to use the powerful cycle tool, connect with ourselves, bring up a nurturing inner voice, and take out emotional trash we may have been carrying with us our entire lives, but were not aware of it.
Participants will learn about exercising for vibrancy and positive neural plasticity. We will also learn about:
- the importance of practicing the tools alone and with others in connection
- a new skill to create more joy will be presented each week
- one small area per week to change to make life healthier
- appreciating our accomplishments
After Launching Your Solution, there will be an option to go on to the second advanced course: "Popping Above the Line."
Prerequisite: Wired for Joy course [see above]
Required text: Solution Kit 1 available online.
