Agaricus praeclaresquamosus (= Agaricus meleagris) can be recognized by its purple-brown spore print, free gills, thick, rubbery annulus, phenolic odor (smells like phenol), its bright yellow staining reaction in the base of the stipe, and its dark-brown, squamulose pileus. Locally, no other species of Agaricus closely resembles it. Agaricus placomyces occurs in eastern North America.
