| Amanita muscaria var. flavivolvata |
| Amanita muscaria var. formosa |
Amanita muscaria is characterized by whitish universal veil remnants which leave pyramidal warts on the pileus, along the margin of the annulus, and on the concentric zones of the volva. Compare closely with A. flavoconia which looks like a smaller version of A. muscaria with a more yellowish pileus and friable and powdery-fibrillose scattered warts on the pileus and the volva; the material which makes up the universal veil often disappears with age in A. flavoconia.
There are several varieties of A. muscaria:
A. muscaria var. muscaria: pileus is bright scarlet yellow and the universal veil remnants are white; see A. muscaria var. flavivolvata.
A. muscaria var. alba which is distinguished by its white to very pale yellow pileus and stipe.
A. muscaria var. flavivolvata: which is characterized by its scarlet colored pileus and its deep yellow to orange yellow universal veil remnants. The pileus is colored as in A. muscaria var. muscaria which differs by its white universal veil remnants.
A. muscaria var. formosa which has a yellow to orange yellow pileus.
