Amanita calpytrata
Amanita calyptrata
white form
Amanita calyptrata is common in tan-oak forests in northern California in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. It is characterized by the single patch on the orange-yellow pileus, the striate pileal margin, the skirt-like annulus that is attached at the apex of the stipe, the sac-like volva, and the stipe which is often flattened and on which a fingerprint can be left when bruised with the flat-part of a finger. It is one of the few species of Amanita that is edible and can not be confused with any other species as long as you apply all of its diagnostic features.
