Hygrophoropsis: two species occur in California,
H. aurantiacus, the false chanterelle, which is Clitocyboid
and H. olida which is Pleurotoid.
Hygrophoropsis aurantiacus ,the false chanterelle, can be recognized by its Clitocyboid stature, gilled, orange to creamy-yellow hymenophore that is distinctly dichotomously branched near the pileal margin, and white spores. The thin, typically lamellate gill-margins and the dichotomous branching distinguish this species from Cantharellus cibarius.
