Hydnum: white spore print; hymenophore spiny; typically the species have a sporocarp that is tough but fleshy; growth pattern is determinate. The species in northern California have an orangish tint to the sporocarp. Phellodon also has white spores but it has dark brown to dark gray colors and an indeterminate growth pattern.
