Clavulina: a difficult genus to identify using only macroscopic features; using microscopic features it is easier because of the 2-spored basidia with very long sterigma. The most reliable feature is the numerous, pointed branch tips which occur in which occur in C. cristata, a white an highly branched species, and C. cinerea, a species with a dark, bluish-gray color in the base of the fruiting body. However, C. ornatipes.does not have numerous, pointed branch tips but is sparsely branched; it can be recognized in the field by the hairy stipe-base. See Coral Fungi.
