Caulorhiza: often with a long radicating stipe which is often buried in the substrate for up to 2/3 its length; stipe often quite broad and typically with a cartilaginous rind and a fleshy to hollow center; it our area the pileus and stipe are concolorous and light reddish-brown and the fruiting bodies are typically found in forests dominated by Coast Redwood. Only one species, Caulorhiza umbonata which typically has an acute umbo on the convex to parabolic pileus; such a feature makes this species appear Mycenoid.
