Rusts, Smuts; Curl Fungi : no basidiocarp; basidia variable; metabasidium rises from a thick-walled resting spores called a teliospore; hymenium absent (rusts, smuts) or present (curl fungi); basidiocarp absent; SPB composed of discs (see handout 8, bottom middle)

Ustilaginales (smuts): sex organs none; sterigma none ; basidium from thick walled spore

Exobasidiales (curl fungi): sexo organs ?; sterigma present; holobasidium (Figure 16-7 A) has a yeast phase.

Ustilago maydis causes smut of corn.
