PLEASE DONATE YOUR CAPS AND GOWNS TO CCAT! Each year at commencement, CCAT collects and recycles caps and gowns to be rented out to students the following year at a fraction of the cost of a new cap and gown. Our Recycled Cap and Gown program not only cuts down on consumptive resource use through the reuse of materials, but the proceeds collected from rentals go towards funding the reconstruction of our greenhouse that was dismantled during CCAT's relocation. Help students save money and support appropriate technology at the same time by recycling your cap and gown! Just look for labeled boxes provided at commencement exits and also on the bookstore balcony. For more information, contact CCAT at ccat@humboldt.edu or 707-826-3551.

CCAT Future Greenhouse

When CCAT was moved in 2004 to a temporary location, the original greenhouse that made the Buck House famous as a solar passively heated home was dismantled. Now that we are settling into our new location, we are looking to rebuild the greenhouse! The greenhouse will serve as a heat and food source, a learning center for tours and workshops and a place of growth for CCAT. The design of the greenhouse has been created by students in multiple classes and will continue to evolve during this next school year. We estimate that, provided we can raise the needed funds, we will be able to begin construction of the greenhouse in the spring of 2009. Our current plan is for a 663 square foot greenhouse, built onto the bottom half of the new CCAT house. From conversations we've had with multiple professors, project managers and folks in the construction world, the estimated cost of the greenhouse is about $15,000. This is a rough estimate of the cost, but we feel it is fairly accurate as a total, as materials may be donated, or material prices may fluctuate. The money that you gift to CCAT for our greenhouse will create a healthy, appropriate, accessible greenhouse, useful for new learning opportunities, food production, seed saving, workshops, tours and CCAT employees and co-directors.

Any gift that you would grant us will help us achieve our dream of a new greenhouse! Currently, our fund raising and saving efforts have created a fund of $5,000 dollars for the greenhouse. Help us reach $15,000 and rebuild CCAT’s famous greenhouse!

CCAT was recently relocated to a new site. The original Buck House was placed on a new foundation and the upstairs was remodeled. We are celebrating our one year anniversary in our new home, but continuing to focus on fund raising to rebuild our site. Our main focus of fund raising is rebuilding our greenhouse, which was dismantled in the move in 2004. The major design of the greenhouse has been created by students and will continue to evolve during this next school year, with construction hopefully beginging in Spring 2009. Donate to CCAT to help our greenhouse dream come true again! Send checks made payable to HSU, with CCAT written in the memo line, Gift Processing Center, 1 Harpst Street, Arcata, CA 95521; or you can make a payment online at http://www.humboldt.edu/giving/online/.

CCAT’s Giving Tree

CCAT’s giving tree was lovingly created to recognize donors who gave $500 or more to help further CCAT’s mission by supporting new activities and projects such as our greenhouse. The giving tree is displayed in CCAT’s library and workshop space, and donor names are painted on individual leaves to commemorate their support. Times are tough, but please consider a gift to CCAT and see your name displayed on our tree. Thanks for your support!

HEIF Solar-Thermal Grant Update

In mid-November, CCAT submitted a proposal to HEIF (HSU Energy Independence Fund) to implement our Solar Thermal Project. We received word in December that CCAT was officially awarded the grant! HURRAH! We are still in the planning stages of the project’s implementation, but this award of almost $15,000 will allow us to purchase and install two evacuated tube panels on CCAT’s roof to showcase solar technologies while providing heat and hot water to the building and reducing energy use. The project will also be used as an education opportunity for students and the community through project implementation and installation, data monitoring and analysis, and an educational interpretive display. A big THANK YOU to HEIF for their support. For more details on the project, refer to the article in the previous issue of the AT Transfer, or email us at ccat@humboldt.edu.

Recycled Caps & Gowns Fundraiser

Each year, CCAT rents out caps and gowns donated from previous years to HSU graduating seniors at a fraction of the cost of a new cap and gown. Funds from rentals go to support CCAT’s projects and programs like the greenhouse, covered bike parking and green shed. This year we sold out at the grad fair, raising over $1700! But we’re not done yet. We will be at commencement, and in addition to cheering on our graduating employees, volunteers and friends, we will be asking people to donate their cap and gown back to CCAT to help us continue to raise funds in the future. Not only will you be supporting the work CCAT does, but you will help reduce negative environmental impact through the reuse of your gown. Please drop your cap and gown in any of the labeled boxes available at commencement, or on the bookstore balcony. For more information, contact us at ccat@humboldt.edu

General Donation Information

This is all great news about the funds that we’re raising, but CCAT still needs your help! There are many exciting projects at CCAT that aren’t funded through our general budget, including the greenhouse, green tool shed, covered bike parking and more. Everyone is strapped for cash right now, but any gift, no matter the amount (even $2 or 25¢ !!) is helpful. Luckily, there are lots of ways to donate!
