General
Information
APA Writing Style Working on a term paper or thesis? If so, you probably have to prepare it according to APA style guidelines. You can either work through your copy of the APA Publication Manual, or you can check out one of the web-based versions such as Degelman’s Style Essentials, the APA Publication Manual Crib Sheet, Plonsky’s Style Guide, or other guides listed on PsychWeb. Recent changes in APA style (use of italics, citing electronic resources) can be found at Wuensch’s Style Page, or APAStyle.org.If the quality of your writing suffers, spend some serious time with Strunk's Elements of Style.
Large Psychology Sites For
general information on academic psychology, two of my favorites are MegaPsych
from John Nichols at
Professional Organizations There are two main organizations in Psychology. The oldest is the American Psychological Association. The APA Monitor has current news on the profession. In 1988, psychologists who were fed up with the applied, health care emphasis of the APA began a competing organization, the American Psychological Society, with a clearer focus on Psychology as an area of scientific research. You should consider getting a student membership in one of these organizations.
CAREER Info -- What can
you do
with a major in psychology?
ADVISEES -- General issues about transfer of G.E. courses and the like are often best handled at the A.I.R. Center. But anything to do with your major is something to take up with your academic advisor (who also has the code you need to enroll in courses each semester). You'll find links to courses for the Psychology major and minor on the Psyc Dept main site and additional advising tips on the Faculty Advising site (intended for faculty advisors but useful for students).
JUNIORS & SENIORS --
Steps to
graduation and (maybe) graduate study.
Preparation for graduation from
HSU. In your Junior
year, take
note of the following tasks:
1.
Each
semester, you should check DARSWEB to monitor your progress towards
your
bachelor’s degree. (From Records & Reg,
you
logon to WebReg, then look for the DARSWeb link where you can request a
“degree
audit.”)
2.
Print
out a copy of the Baccalaureate
Major Requirements Form, list all courses you plan to take for the
major,
get your advisor’s signature and turn it in to the Psychology Dept
office. (For the psychology minor, the
form needed is
the Psychology
Minor Requirements Form.)
3.
Print
out a copy of the Bachelor’s
Degree Application for Graduation (degree check form), complete it
and
follow the directions for turning it in.
Note that you can later update this form (e.g. change your
graduation
date) by completing the Degree
Check Update Request.)
4.
Sign
up to take the Graduate
Writing Proficiency Exam
(GWPE) at the Testing
Center.
5.
While
doing this, you should also be thinking about graduate school
possibilities. A good source of
information is the PsychGrad Portal. The APA Book, Graduate Study in
Psychology, is useful for deciding where to apply
(see copy in the Psychology Dept Office, the campus library, or
purchase your
own copy from the apa.org site.) You
will find excellent advice on what to avoid when preparing your
application in this
article. See also 1 and 2.
Information on the Graduate
Record Exam is at the ETS
site.
